The videos collection

Tedmed.org comprises a collection of videos dedicated to supporting the teaching of doctor-patient communication. Most of the videos in the collection are of training interviews between trainees in Family Medicine and simulated patients. Because of the wide variety of scenarios used in the interviews, and the wide range of sophistication and skills demonstrated in the interviews, this collection is a potential rich source of teaching material.  The collection also holds a small number of video clips originating in the film industry and a few didactic tapes relevant teaching doctor-patient communication.

How is the collection structured?

The main video collection is organized into two parts: full interviews ,  and short clips taken from within the full interviews.  The full interviews ( which last on the average 10 minutes and do not include filming of the physical exam)  cover a wide range of clinical situations and communication challenges.  The short clips vary in length from 15 seconds to about a minute and a half and they each illustrate well one or more concepts or skills. There are from one to ten short teaching clips per full interview.

How is the material in the collection catalogued ?

The full interviews are classified- and therefore can be searched –  according to four independent sets of categories. These categories relate respectively to 1) the demographics of the interview,  2) issues of professionalism arising in the interview   3) special situations encountered in the interview and  4) the main functions of the doctor illustrated in the interview. Because the category sets are independent of one another, each full interview is likely to be “tagged”  by more than one qualifier or “tag”. For example the same interview might be labeled for being with an old male patient, for dealing with bad news, and for illustrating the doctor’s functions of “managing” the interview and “connecting” with the patient.

You can identify and access videos of whole interviews with the desired qualifiers by clicking on the appropriate category and sub-category tags 0n “xxx” on.

The teaching clips are classified separately by the use of a set of different qualifiers, or “tags”, that relate in a more focused manner to the skills and concepts of communicating illustrated in the clips. These tags can be accessed at XXXX

The catalogue cross references the clips and the whole interviews making one source accessible from the other.

While most of the tags for the full videos and the clips and use terminology that is common to all models of communication, and that is more or less self-explanatory, some of the tags use terms arise from a less conventional model.   For a fuller explanation of any tag you can visit the glossary of terms  or “the three ring model in a nutshell”

Who can use the Tedmed.org collection?

The collection is intended primarily as a resource for teachers of doctor-patient communication and of managing the consultation.  The teachers can use the videos and clips in the collection as trigger films for group discussions or they can use them to illustrate specific issues as part of didactic presentations. Furthermore, the collection can be used as a resource for building an interactive on-line course comprising didactic sections, training exercises and self-assessment modules.

The collection can also serve individual learners (such as medical students, or doctors at all stages of their training and their careers) who want to advance their knowledge about doctor-patient communication and managing the consultation.  Such individuals, however, would be advised to register for an on-line course that selects and organizes material from the collection in such a way as to maximize its educational potential. [For an example of such a course see the Moodle: xxxxx]
